Educating Future Engineers on the Importance of Surge Protection

By Jason Koshy, Vice President of Global Sales

At Infinite Electronics, we believe it’s part of our responsibility to support the growth of future engineers – and we start early.

I recently had the opportunity to speak to my daughter’s fifth grade class as part of the Great American Teach-In, an annual event that encourages thousands of volunteers to share the unique attributes of their career to students ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade. I spoke about what we do at Infinite Electronics and the role engineers play in developing technology to protect against lightning and other electrical surges.

Surge protection is a big part of what we do at Infinite Electronics, and we’ll definitely need a future workforce not only trained in this technology, but passionate about the topic. To spark inspiration, during the presentation I shared why lightning happens and the potential damage caused by this natural phenomenon. I also reviewed personal lightning safety practices while emphasizing that protection is also needed to prevent external and internal power surges that can affect appliances, circuit breakers and light fixtures in your home. To make all the information relatable and fun, I also shared how many superheroes and villains use lightning – that part always gets the kids excited!

For the past two years, I shared this presentation with elementary students, and they are always my favorite audience. Investing time in our children and in the community is something that I am passionate about, and it is also ingrained in the culture at Infinite Electronics. While not every student in the class will be an engineer, discussing my career and the role it plays in protecting homes and important systems from surges helps them dream big. At Infinite Electronics, we help connect our customers innovations to get to the moon, deliver life-saving aid in Africa and impact the world in countless ways. The possibilities are endless, and what better message can you send to a fifth grader?
